What Is Batting Strike Rate?

In cricket, strike rate measures how quickly a batter scores. It is the number of runs scored per 100 balls faced, which makes it easy to compare innings of different lengths across formats.

The Formula

Strike Rate = (Runs ÷ Balls) × 100

Example: 72 runs off 48 balls = (72 ÷ 48) × 100 = 150.00.

Why It Matters By Format

  • In T20 cricket, a high strike rate is prized — every ball counts and quick runs win games.
  • In ODIs, strike rate is balanced against building a long innings and preserving wickets.
  • In Tests, occupation of the crease often outweighs fast scoring, so strike rates are naturally lower.

It depends on the format. In T20, anything above roughly 130–140 is strong and 180+ is explosive. In ODIs a strike rate around 90–100+ is very good, while in Test cricket 50–60 is typical and healthy.
